The Survivors of Lemuria
The Komodo Lizard is a large varanid (monitor) lizard native to all the islands surrounding the Lemurian Sea. Like all true reptiles it grows continuously throughout its life, and therefore can appear in any size from very small (essentially harmless) through a monstrosity over 20 feet long. Large specimens are quite capable of swimming across short distances at sea using their powerful tails much in the manner of crocodilians.
The Komodo Lizard’s thick scales and surprising quickness give it a better armor class than might be expected, and it is able to attack with both its powerful bite and its lashing tail. Its most dangerous weapon is the bacteriological poison its mouth hosts, however. Anyone bitten by a Komodo Lizard must make a saving throw versus poison or begin slowly succumbing to the toxin. It can take over a week for a victim to die from the poison, even of a large lizard.
The Komodo Lizard is not extremely intelligent, but its senses, particularly its sense of smell, are extraordinarily keen, and it is a vicious predator which only fears larger versions of its own species. And it doesn’t fear them very much.
