The Survivors of Lemuria
The Ajalung, also known as the Iron Dragon, is a rare species which seems to bridge the gap between dragons and other sentient reptiles. It is moderately-to-highly intelligent, and has similar age/size categories to other dragons. However, unlike normal dragons, the ajalung does not have a constant set of hit dice, receiving one hit point per die per age category. Instead, the ajalung uses d4+4 for hit dice (beginning with 3) and receives an additional hit die per age category. Its damage, armor class, and breath weapon also improve as it ages. In addition, the ajalung does not have wings and cannot fly; however, it is a strong swimmer and breath-hold diver, with the ability to go for 2 hours per hit die without breathing. Ajalung tend toward good in alignment, and are usually though not always lawful. They sometimes speak Common and very rarely are capable of learning spells. Those which can learn spells can learn level 1-2 spells of either cleric or magic-user variety, although not both. Those who can use spells gain one additional spell per age category.
The breath weapon is a cloud of hot steam that is less powerful than the breath weapon of a true dragon, but it does improve as the creature ages. The range begins at 2" (20 yards) for a very young ajalung, and increases by 2" per age category.
